In today’s society, the pressure to be thin is crushing. Many of us find it hard to exercise and to eat healthy. The reason for this is that we are impatient creatures. We want results and we want them now. Fad diets come and fad diets go. There are not many people left on earth who have not heard of the Atkins Diet. This low carb diet works well for some folks but it leaves one feeling drained and tired. And who hasn’t heard of the South Beach Diet? This diet promises to get you back on the road to a healthy lifestyle but with all of the complicated rules and restrictions that come with this particular diet, we are left confused about what we can eat and at what phase of the diet. In the end, we are confused and frustrated.
Losing weight and keeping the weight off requires determination. The sad fact is that many people will do just about anything in order to get fast and easy results. Listed here are nine of the wackiest, if not most dangerous diets that have been in the spotlight at one time or another.
1. Master Cleanse
The Master Cleanse also goes by the names of the Lemon Cleanse and the Maple Syrup Diet. This diet was developed way back in 1941 by Stanley Burroughs. The principle behind this diet was detoxification. Over a period of ten days, one is to consume nothing but lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne pepper. It was believed that the body would rid itself of harmful toxins and that the person would lose weight and even cure himself of disease. Some people have remained on this diet for 45 days, believe it or not.
2. Sleeping Beauty Diet
It is reported that Elvis Presley was an advocate of the Sleeping Beauty Diet. What this diet entails is, well, sleeping off unwanted weight. You simply sedate yourself and shed those unwanted pounds. Ridiculous, but it was out there.
3. Grapefruit Diet
The grapefruit diet is also known as the ‘Hollywood Diet’. It involves eating half of a grapefruit or drinking the juice of a grapefruit with every meal. You must not eat more than 800 calories in a day on this fad diet. Supposedly, the fat burning enzymes that are in the grapefruit will burn the fat away. There is however, no medical backing confirming that this is true. This diet is not only monotonous and boring, but it will undoubtedly lead to failure as most people will simply fall back into their old habits once the diet is no longer followed.
4. Tapeworm Diet Pills
If the name is not disgusting enough, some people out there actually tried this diet. You can get tapeworms from eating raw meat. There was also a rumor flying around that you could get this in the form of a pill, which is thankfully, very untrue.
The principles behind this diet is that tapeworms secret a protein into a human’s intestinal track that makes the process of digestion less effective. The tapeworms themselves are doing the digesting for your body, so you can lose pounds and eat whatever you want. This diet is downright vile and obviously not approved by the FDA.
5. Vision-Dieter Glasses
Although this diet is not dangerous, it is just plain stupid. The glasses are designed so that when you wear them, the blue tinted lenses make your food look unappetizing. Not only will your food look unappealing, you will as well. Enough said.
6. Cotton Ball Diet
Some people actually believe that if you eat cotton balls, your appetite will be suppressed. After all, cotton balls are low in calories and high in fiber. But, um, cotton balls are absorbing and they could clog your digestive system, not to mention what they may produce as the end by-product.
7. Diet Fork
This is right up there with the vision-dieter glasses. The thing here is that you use a small fork so that your portions look smaller. Enough said. On to the next.
8. Ear Stapling
We’ve all heard of ear piercing, but ear stapling? This clever diet involves stapling your ear cartilage because it is supposed to suppress your appetite. Not to mention the infections, nerve damage and excruciating pain, this is against the law in the state of Florida.
9. Diet Patches
Diet patches are made for lazy people. The FDA has approved nicotine patches however they have not approved diet patches. This method is one of those ‘too good to believe’ deals and it’s best to save your money as diet patches will more than likely not help you lose a bit of weight.
