Adipex and Breastfeeding

You have gained several extra pounds during pregnancy and are now seriously considering going on a weight loss program. You have heard about Adipex and are sold on its appetite suppressing appeal. Before you start ordering online, you must know that it is illegal to do so without a valid prescription.

Adipex is strictly a prescription weight loss drug and should not be available online, with or without a written medical permission. There are numerous reasons why the FDA has regulated its distribution. Weight loss drugs can be hazardous in the wrong hands. Individuals are profiled before a physician can prescribe them. Pregnant and breastfeeding women generally do not fall under the “safe-for-administration” category for prescribing any weight loss drug.

Does Adipex Pass Through Breast Milk?

There are currently no studies on humans or animals to present concrete evidence that Adipex is passed through breast milk. Amphetamines, for which Adipex or its generic form, phentermine, share a chemical similarity, have been known however to concentrate in breast milk. It may be right then to infer from the similarity that Adipex can behave in the same way.

How Can Adipex Affect Breastfed Infants?

Breastfed babies whose mothers were taking amphetamines exhibited the following traits:

• Irritability

• Over-activity and unsettledness

• Low muscle tone

• Bad sleep patterns

• Breathing difficulties

Long term effects have shown impaired growth, behavioral problems and learning difficulties. Since Adipex is a close chemical relation to amphetamine, it will not be surprising to find babies exposed to Adipex exhibiting the same characteristics.

Adipex, like speed or amphetamine, is habit forming. With this in mind, it can logically be deduced that breastfed infants fed with Adipex-concentrated breast milk can develop an addiction for it. Addicted babies will experience withdrawal symptoms in the first few weeks of weaning and may have to be hospitalized.

Talking With Your Doctor

If breastfeeding, always consult your health care provider before taking any drug or supplement. It is not only your health you need to think of but that of another, solely dependent on your health as well. Your doctor may or may not give you the “go” signal for Adipex; but, as a general rule of thumb it is best to avoid unnecessary medications.

Balanced nutrition and exercise during your breastfeeding period is what you need to start on a weight loss program. Your doctor may be able to start you off on an effective course of action. Besides, exercise and a good diet are still imperative even if you are taking Adipex. All you need is the determination and the proper frame of mind to get started on a healthier lifestyle.
